About the camp

The Learn to Play Chess Camp is suitable for players aged 6–12 who are still learning the rules.

Every chess player starts somewhere, and this camp makes the start magical. Through five days of storytelling adventures, your child will learn how every piece moves, how to castle their king to safety, how to control the centre of the board, and how to value pieces so they make smart trades. Each lesson is wrapped in a story, from timid knights finding their courage in the centre of the board to rook lasers chasing down a mischievous duck, so the rules stick because kids can't wait to find out what happens next. The week ends with a friendly mini tournament where every camper gets to play their first real games and every child walks away with a prize-worthy moment. Along the way, they'll build the focus, patience and confidence that make chess such a gift, whether or not they ever play competitively.

Taught by chess players and storytellers with thousands of lessons of teaching experience under their belts!

Registration is currently open and will close once all 8 slots have been filled.

Schedule

Monday: Meet the Pieces, Meet Your Powers
"The Kingdom Awakens"
Every hero starts somewhere small, even a pawn! Campers meet the six pieces of Chessoria and discover how each one moves and what makes it special. Then they set out on their first quest: the Treasure Hunt, capturing gems across the board with a full army where every piece is worth different points.

Tuesday: Danger Zones and the First Check
"Sound the Alarm!"
Every kingdom has its dangers. Campers learn to spot danger squares and experience their very first "Check!", the thrilling moment a king comes under attack. Then things get delightfully backwards with Anti Chess, where capturing is compulsory and the goal is to lose every piece you've got.

Wednesday: The Final Blow, Checkmate Day
"How Heroes Finish the Story"
It's time to learn how battles truly end. Campers play Triple Check (first to land 3 checks wins) and Lone King, mastering the art of hunting down a king and finishing a game with confidence.

Thursday: Piece Values and the Art of the Trade
"What's It Really Worth?"
Not all pieces are created equal! Campers explore piece values and what makes a trade fair, then put it to the test with a lineup of wild variants: Bullseye, Knightmare, Mind Control, and Business Chess.

Friday: Tournament Day!
"The Grand Championship"
A week of skills, all leading to this. Campers recap everything they've learned, then step onto the board for their very first tournament, complete with prizes and a closing ceremony to crown the week's champions.
