About the camp

The Learn to Play Chess Camp is suitable for players aged 6–12 who are still learning the rules.

Every chess player starts somewhere, and this camp makes the start magical. Through five days of storytelling adventures, your child will learn how every piece moves, how to castle their king to safety, how to control the centre of the board, and how to value pieces so they make smart trades. Each lesson is wrapped in a story, from timid knights finding their courage in the centre of the board to rook lasers chasing down a mischievous duck, so the rules stick because kids can't wait to find out what happens next. The week ends with a friendly mini tournament where every camper gets to play their first real games and every child walks away with a prize-worthy moment. Along the way, they'll build the focus, patience and confidence that make chess such a gift, whether or not they ever play competitively.

Taught by chess players and storytellers with thousands of lessons of teaching experience under their belts!

Schedule

Monday: Meet the Chess Pieces!
"The Great Chess Treasure Hunt"
Meet the chess pieces and discover how each one moves! Kids then embark on an exciting Treasure Hunt, capturing gems around the board with a full set of pieces, while learning that every piece has its own special value!

Tuesday: Danger Squares & Check!
"The Great Escape"
Watch out! Danger is everywhere on the chessboard. Kids learn to spot danger squares and make their very first “check.” Then, they flip the rules upside down with Anti Chess, where capturing is compulsory and the goal is to lose all your pieces!

Wednesday: Checkmate Day!
"Checkmate Champions"
It’s time to learn how to finish the game! Kids discover the basics of checkmate through exciting games like Triple Check, where the first player to give three checks wins, and Lone King, where they practice delivering the final blow.

Thursday: Piece Values & Trading
"The Great Chess Marketplace"
Which pieces are worth more, and when is a trade a good idea? Kids learn piece values and how to make smart exchanges before jumping into fun chess variants like Bullseye, Knightmare, Mind Control, and Business Chess!

Friday: Tournament Day!
"The Grand Chess Championship"
Time to put everything they’ve learned into action! Kids recap the highlights from the entire week before competing in their first-ever chess tournament, complete with exciting prizes and a special closing ceremony!
